Matching Visuals to Lyrics

It is some what important to have a correlation between the lyrics and the content in the music video, this makes the video flow nicely and also have relevance. Matching visuals to sound is also as equally important; having an upbeat song accompanied by dark, low key visuals may seem a little strange and aesthetically uncomfortable for the audience. In some conceptual music videos you may find that the director has intentionally contradicted that rule as an interesting juxtaposition.

The Years & Years music video for 'King' is a clear example of matching song and visual as they both work together half way through the song. The video shows the lead singer, Olly, falling into deep water, the drum and bass suddenly stops and leaves the lyrics and piano for a short duration. There is a similar match of lyrics to visual as the singer sings 'let go' as the singer also lets go into the water.
Another video which portrays the lyrics to visual theme is 'Cocoon' by Catfish and the Bottlemen. The video is solely narrative based and the song focusses on a love between two people which is not allowed to happen as the video is set in a mental institution, as the title suggests, they are cocooned. One of the lyrics is "I cocoon round your shoulders when you're half cut and you're frozen this connotes to how the young lady is frozen in her chair as she stares out the window and doesn't speak.
